• Hantavirus

Hantavirus can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) formerly called Korean hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms of the renal syndrome start by fever, headache, malaise followed by tachycardia. Acute renal failure and proteinuria occurs. Oliguric renal failure is followed by dieresis then a convalescence phase. Hantavirus (cardio-) pulmonary syndrome is transmitted through inhalation of aerosolized virus in the urine, droppings, or saliva of rodents. It can cause tachycardia, tachypnea, then cardiovascular shock can occur. Treatment includes aggressive fluid recussitation, oxygen inhalation. Inotropes can be used. No specific aniviral treatment is available, but ribavirin can be used.
