Nipah virus was identified in 1999 where it caused an outbreak of encephalitis in humans working in pig farms. The primary reservoir of the virus was found to be the pteropid fruit bats (flying foxes). It transmits from bats to pigs through spilling of bats' excreta anf fruit remains to pigs. Several outbreaks happened in India and Bangladesh. Ribavirin may be used but further studies are still needed to prove its efficacy.
